It looks like this is it – according to Matt Cutts’ Google Blog, he announced yesterday that the Google Toolbar Pageranks are being updated. It’s been a while since the last PageRank update – right around the end of April, 2008 – but it has been an expected interval, since it appears the Google PageRank updates are coming in every 3 months.
There is still a lot of debate around the usefulness of PageRank. What good is having a good one, if you aren’t appearing in search engine results? Most professional SEOs will spend their time trying to improve keyword rankings for their client’s in Google, Yahoo and MSN, rather than trying to play around with PageRank, which is just a fancy formula for counting backlinks to your site.
But Search Engine Optimization is a competitive business by nature, and having a better PageRank is just something to brag about. So why not brag about it? Since my last blog post on May 1, 2008, when I asked everyone to watch this space, I’ve increased this blog’s PageRank from 0 to 2. While that is a good quantitative result, more importantly is the long tail keyword marketing which I’ve used on this blog to increase traffic and exposure.
Enough about me … what about some of my clients’ PageRank? Well:
Mayors Wellness Campaign: Increased from a PageRank 0 to a PageRank 4!
This is a new client for ITCN, for which we re-designed the entire website with SEO ranking factors in mind. Our modest promotional effort of the new launch also paid great dividends, with a 4 point PageRank increase!
Greets and Treats: Increased from a PageRank 0 to PageRank 3.
This is a client we did some work for back in April, and we didn’t quite make the cut for the first PageRank update. I’m glad to see our hard work finally paid off, though, with a 3 point PageRank increase.
Trenton Housing Authority: increased from a PageRank 2 to a PageRank 3
Another ITCN client we designed the website for with SEO in mind.
Minneapolis Realtor Blog: Increased from a brand new domain with 0 to PageRank 1 in 2 months!
A realtor in Minneapolis I’m helping out with a very modest, but successful, promotional campaign.

Great, so that means that we’re all going to see increased traffic and tons of hits to these websites! Well, no, it doesn’t work that way. All increased PageRank really does is help increase the PageRank of other pages you link to. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to get better rankings in search engine result pages, it doesn’t mean you’re going to be first result on Google, it doesn’t mean … well, it really doesn’t mean much. But it gives SEOs like me something to blog about before I go out to see Will Ferrell’s new movie Step Brothers tonight :)
